In 1994 he joined Deutsche Bahn AG and acted as Member of the Executive Board and CEO of passenger transport division. In 2004 he became Chief Executive Officer of Swiss International Air Lines AG. In 2009 Dr. Franz became Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Deputy to the Executive Board Chairman and CEO Lufthansa Passenger Airlines. Since January 2011 he was Chairman of the Executive Board and Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. He holds a Doctorate degree from Technische Universitaet Darmstadt . since 2011.
