American competes with DUKE, SOUTHERN, KOREA, DOMINION, and PPL CORP. American Electric Power Co Inc generates electricity using coal and lignite, natural gas, nuclear energy, and hydroelectric energy. It also supplies and markets electric power at wholesale to other electric utility companies, municipalities, and other market participants. As of December 31, 2012, American Electric Power Co Inc owned and leased approximately 37, 300 megawatts of domestic generation capacity. In addition, it transports coal and dry bulk commodities primarily on the Ohio, Illinois, and lower Mississippi rivers. American Electric Power Co Inc owns and leases approximately 2, 600 barges, 45 towboats, and 25 harbor boats. It operates primarily in the states of Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. American Electric Power Company, Inc. was founded in 1906 and is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.
