He has more than three decades of experience in the financial industry. From 1979 to 1988, Mr Poon served at Citibank N.A. where he was responsible for credit, marketing, remedial management and structured finance. From 1988 to 2006, when he retired as senior executive vice president from United Overseas Bank Limited, Mr Poon was responsible for consumer banking, corporate banking, commercial banking, corporate finance and international banking at UOB. since 2016.

Elected by the shareholders, the UOL Group's board of directors comprises two types of representatives: UOL Group inside directors who are chosen from within the company, and outside directors, selected externally and held independent of UOL. The board's role is to monitor UOL Group's management team and ensure that shareholders' interests are well served. UOL Group's inside directors are responsible for reviewing and approving budgets prepared by upper management to implement core corporate initiatives and projects. On the other hand, UOL Group's outside directors are responsible for providing unbiased perspectives on the board's policies.
