A more reliable light to use this in is with fundamental analysis because that will shed light on the reasons for the returns being the way they are. Yes, you can look at historical data and movements, but it doesn’t explain why those movements occurred.

Year to date returns is quick measurement that you can compare against others across the board. This data point in itself provides value, but it should not be relied upon because it does not tell the whole story. The year to date returns could be slowed or lower for reasons such as acquisition costs hit, which for the short term appears bad but the long term it appears great.
